The artist intends to paint a large format pastel work, and was experimenting with using a gesso primed canvas as a support rather than traditional pastel paper. He was concerned that the texture of the gesso may detract.
Feedback :
The painting has a pleasing composition, the focus on the right is slightly emphasised by the forest path hinted at and pointing to the righthand third. The gesso texture is visible in both the sky, foliage and foreground. While it is evident, it does not overly detract from the loose painting style. In fact, the texture makes foliage more lifelike. Generally, the format works and a more even gesso base or sanding may enable sharper detail, in this case, the balance of loose and texture combine in a pleasing painting. The underpainting does not dominate and is only evident in certain foliage that hints at leafless branches, overall the underpainting allows the white to shine through but provides an even colour base to the painting. Any unevenness is more due to gesso texture. The loose strokes and blending, along with the light touch of the pastel so that it just leave colour on the textured surface, provide convincing foliage. It is pleasing to see less blending of colours so that the pastel overlays provide a fresh colour blend. The artist has achieved a fair result for the experimental work of mixed media.
